Hello friends and anonymous internet people, I thought it might be fun to share some process pics and give y’all a sneak peek at Van Dammage Goes to Hollywood ISSUE TWO. I still have some print copies of issue one available in my shop so grab one before they are gone.
I tend to work in production stages rather than completing one page at a time. That means I write out the scripts, thumbnail every page, pencil every page, ink every page, and finally color every page. I’m currently knee-deep in the penciling stage and honestly, I was hoping I’d be done with pencils by now but I caught Covid in Las Vegas like a sucker so here we are.
Script:
I don’t get very fancy with my scripts and I tend to change them quite a bit when I actually letter the comic. I just use the notes app on my computer and include enough details for myself to remember what I had in mind when I sit down to draw.
Thumbnails:
I draw these in a little Thumbnail sketchbook that is about 4”x5”. They are pretty small pages but big enough to work out the setting, characters, body language, and dialogue balloons.
Pencils:
When I’m finished thumbnailing I scan them into my computer and blow them up to print size. I also do a lettering pass to make sure everything will fit. Finally, I print them out in very light blue and then just pencil right on top of my thumbnails.
I hope y’all enjoyed this peek behind the curtain, I’ll be sharing more as I work on issue two. If you’ve read issue one drop a comment and let me know what you thought! See ya later Van Dammers!
